In Brooklyn, the William A. Butler School grows with its neighborhood, making space for two primary schools and 950 young learners in one shared building. SBLM blends new ideas with cherished details, keeping pieces of the original school alive through steep roofs, classic brickwork, and the reuse of its former elements.

The former school was designed by the famous C.B. Snyder. It was an iconic institution and hub that brought up many treasured local voices. When the school was no longer able to adequately accommodate the burgeoning requirements of 950 students, SBLM was given the exciting task of designing a new school for the neighborhood. Careful work was done to honor the story that the previous school had told. Design ideas, elements, and memorial objects were preserved and used in the new design.

The final design was a striking 116,00 square-foot educational space that now houses two district primary schools. Classrooms, event spaces, a gymnasium, and auditorium were built to enrich the student’s learning experience. Additionally, a community garden and playground were built as the bridge between the school and the neighborhood around it.
