At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare systems across the country were pushed to their limits. In response, Northwell Health turned to SBLM to help expand critical capacity at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, Long Island. The assignment: design a four-story addition to the existing Brackett Building that could meet immediate care demands while preparing for the region’s long-term growth. The result was a smart, flexible expansion that includes two fully equipped in-patient bed floors and two shell floors built to support future programs—including hybrid operating rooms designed for image-guided surgery, all within tight floor-to-floor height constraints.

The site presented unique technical and logistical challenges: a location within a hurricane zone and flood plain, an adjacent emergency generator affecting acoustics, and the need to relocate a primary egress stair without disrupting hospital operations. SBLM led a multi-disciplinary team through a tightly coordinated effort to solve each of these challenges. The result is a seamless addition that integrates both functionally and visually with the existing hospital, while giving South Shore a modern architectural presence that reflects its evolving role as Northwell’s flagship facility in Suffolk County.
