As part of the hotel’s recent transformation, a new design vision emerged: to reimagine its street-oriented retail in a way that honors the building’s rich architectural heritage while opening its doors—literally and figuratively—to the city beyond.
The challenge was formidable. The retail spaces had to be carefully inserted into a complex context—where the historic façade, stepped floor plates due to below-grade train infrastructure, and the presence of a secure diplomat entrance and assembly space egress compromised the typical rhythm and continuity of street retail. Yet it was precisely this complexity that invited a more nuanced and refined design approach.
The architectural response was rooted in both restraint and precision. Drawing inspiration from the Barclay’s Beaux-Arts detailing, the new retail frontage was conceived as a seamless extension of the original building—respecting the proportions, materiality, and cadence of the historic façade while introducing subtle contemporary interventions. Hand-finished stone, custom metalwork, and carefully integrated lighting elements create a unified streetwall that feels both authentic and current.

“The result is more than a series of storefronts. It is an activated street edge that feels integral to the hotel’s identity and to the city itself.”

To resolve the irregular conditions behind the façade, the design team employed strategic elevation shifts and spatial infill strategies, leveling transitions internally while preserving clean, accessible entries from the street. Retail bays were calibrated to accommodate small-format tenants—boutique brands, curated services, and specialty retailers whose offerings complement the hotel’s global guest profile and local foot traffic. Disruptions such as egress stairs and the diplomat entrance were elegantly masked within the architectural rhythm, blended with materiality qndarticulated with custom grilles. These moments of necessity became opportunities for design articulation—adding visual interest without compromising continuity.
A place where history meets modern retail, where design reconciles constraint with opportunity, and where the Intercontinental Barclay invites passersby to pause, discover, and engage. Through thoughtful design, a once-disjointed façade becomes a unified experience—rooted in legacy, built for today, and ready for what’s next.
