Petco’s retail expansion program wasn’t just about growing its footprint. It was about aligning new stores with an evolving business model that blends retail, wellness, services, and community engagement in a single environment. SBLM supported that shift by delivering site-specific solutions that held true to brand priorities while responding to real operational needs.

Every location presents a different set of constraints. Some are conversions of former big-box tenants. Others are infill developments in dense suburban corridors. SBLM’s task was to create a repeatable approach that could flex based on layout, municipality, and timeline. The store layout emphasizes visibility and movement. Grooming stations, veterinary services, and adoption areas each require different acoustic, spatial, and circulation conditions. These zones are not just layered on top of a retail plan. They are integrated from the start to support both the customer journey and operational flow.

Product visibility is balanced with restraint. Aisles are wide enough for pets and families to navigate together. Lighting is tuned to minimize shadow and highlight key product categories without flattening the environment. Flooring is chosen for traction, durability, and ease of cleaning. Back-of-house logistics matter in a rollout of this scale. SBLM worked with internal teams to streamline delivery access, waste management, and cross-docking conditions for locations with limited receiving areas. Where space was tight, creative zoning solutions and staggered service flows helped maintain store function without affecting the customer experience.

The goal was never to reinvent the wheel at each location. It was to make sure the wheel fits the road. SBLM’s work helped Petco expand without losing control of quality, cost, or pace.
