Radiation oncology is one of the most complex environments in healthcare design. The clinical requirements are demanding, the technology is highly specialized, and the emotional landscape for patients is often intense. For Mount Sinai, the new facility had to meet all of those needs while remaining adaptable to future treatment protocols. SBLM worked closely with clinicians, physicists, and administrative staff to understand how the space would function on a daily basis.

The goal was not just to house the technology, but to create an environment where medical teams could deliver precision care and patients could feel supported throughout their treatment. The layout reflects the flow of care. From arrival to consultation to treatment, each transition is managed through controlled movement, acoustic separation, and visual clarity. Waiting areas are quiet and unobtrusive. Circulation paths separate patients and staff where needed, while still allowing opportunities for human connection when appropriate.

Treatment zones are surrounded by critical support spaces. Rather than isolating the procedure rooms, SBLM placed prep and consult areas nearby to allow for real-time coordination between nurses, oncologists, and technicians. This shortens response times and reduces stress for patients and staff alike. Lighting and materials were chosen for function first. Glare is minimized. Sound is softened. Walls and floors are cleanable without feeling institutional. The result is an atmosphere that helps patients stay grounded during a difficult course of care.

"This space lets us focus on treatment, not logistics," a senior clinician shared. "It works the way we work, and that’s not easy to achieve in a facility like this." SBLM’s design does more than meet code. It anticipates the next generation of oncology care, with enough flexibility to evolve as therapies and technologies change.
