At Montefiore Medical Center’s Hutchinson Campus in the Bronx, SBLM Architects transforms an MRI suite into an environment that reduces anxiety while advancing diagnostic care. The design addresses the dual need for patient comfort and staff efficiency, setting a new standard for imaging facilities.

The suite integrates a state-of-the-art T3 MRI unit with an interior that emphasizes calm through materiality and light. Warm finishes, custom millwork, and adjustable LED illumination create an atmosphere that softens the clinical setting and helps patients feel at ease during procedures.

"Architecture in healthcare should do more than contain machines—it should create spaces where patients feel calm and caregivers feel supported."

Equally important is the organization of supporting spaces. The control room and corridor are reconfigured to improve circulation and support staff workflow. These adjustments ensure that daily operations run smoothly, even during high-demand hours, and that staff can focus on patient interaction rather than logistical challenges.

Renovation occurs while an adjacent MRI unit remains active, requiring careful sequencing and coordination. Continuous care for patients is preserved without interruption, reinforcing Montefiore’s commitment to accessibility and reliability. This project reflects SBLM’s broader philosophy: healthcare design must respond to technical requirements without losing sight of the human experience. By aligning advanced equipment with environments that calm and protect, the suite demonstrates how architecture contributes directly to better outcomes and a stronger sense of trust in care.
