Canco Lofts

New Jersey

SBLM's adaptive re-use of the landmarked 1,000,000 sf American Can Company building is a high-profile example of the ongoing revitalization of Jersey City, New Jersey. The renovation of this former seven-story warehouse into luxury condominiums totals 400,000 sf, including 10,000 sf of amenity space on the ground floor. Important characteristics of the original building are preserved in the conversion, including the retention of the Art Deco facade, the saw-toothed roof, grand-scaled windows, and soaring ceiling heights. In addition to the replacement of almost 2,000 windows, the deteriorating masonry of the facade was rehabilitated and updated roofing elements were installed. The addition of skylights maximizes passive lighting for energy-efficiency while creating a bright, modern ambiance.
