SBLM designs a new stand-alone gymnasium for the Michael E. Berdy School, addressing the long-standing need for an indoor facility dedicated to athletics and recreation. Located in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn, the existing school had operated for years without a formal gymnasium, limiting physical education opportunities for students and community programs.

Through a detailed site study, SBLM determines that a gymnasium can be added by repurposing a portion of the playground and relocating the Early Childhood Play Area. The design includes a regulation basketball court, bleachers, and locker facilities to support school and community use.

To ensure safe and efficient circulation, the new entrance connects directly to the existing school through a secure, covered walkway. The project provides a purpose-built space for recreation and events while strengthening the school’s connection to its students and neighborhood.
