As part of the Healthy Schools Initiative within New York City's 2020–2024 Five-Year Capital Plan, this Cafeteria Experience Enhancement project reimagines the traditional school dining environment as a welcoming, engaging, and health-conscious space. The renovation focuses on improving the physical and experiential qualities of the cafeteria, recognizing the important role that thoughtfully designed dining environments play in encouraging healthy eating habits, supporting student well-being, and enhancing the overall educational experience.

The design transforms the existing cafeteria through strategic architectural interventions that improve openness, natural light, and visual connectivity. Interior partitions were removed to create a more expansive and flexible dining environment, while new exterior fenestration introduces additional daylight and strengthens the connection between interior and exterior spaces. A vibrant, carefully coordinated color palette establishes an inviting atmosphere that encourages social interaction and creates a positive daily experience for students. The project also incorporates a new entrance vestibule connecting the cafeteria to the adjacent play yard, improving circulation and accessibility, along with a complete replacement of the mechanical system with new energy-efficient equipment to enhance indoor environmental comfort and building performance.

Complementing the cafeteria renovation, an adjacent hydroponics laboratory extends the project's impact beyond the dining experience by integrating hands-on agricultural education into the school environment. The laboratory provides students with opportunities to explore food production, sustainable growing practices, and environmental stewardship, reinforcing the connection between nutrition, science, and everyday learning. Together, these improvements establish a more functional, sustainable, and engaging school environment that supports student health, encourages curiosity, and advances the broader objectives of the Healthy Schools Initiative.
