Brooklyn Navy Yard Sands Building

Brooklyn, NY

This new building’s proposed site is at the gateway to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre parcel of land on the scenic Brooklyn waterfront. To maximize the footprint of the 75,000-sf irregularly shaped lot, SBLM used a linear building typology that hugs the perimeter, allowing the building to play a significant role in the urban context beyond the Yard. This urban connectivity creates a pedestrian-friendly corridor and eliminates the need for an additional security fence. In essence, the building serves as the entrance to and emblem of the larger Yard. SBLM's design recommendation responds to the client’s program requirements, LEED Silver goals, budget limitations, and the site’s historical context in an economical, striking design that paves a path for further neighborhood development efforts.
