About Us

SBLM began in 1993 as Shiffer, Burdick, Litchfield Magnuson Architects as a New York City architectural practice and continued as such until 2005 when Edward Shiffer officially retired. Larry Litchfield had retired three years prior and continued to work as a consultant to the firm. When Ed retired, he sold his shares to Joshua Burdick who was then president and remains in that role today. The name changed to SBLM became officially registered when the transaction of Shiffer’s shares was completed. Under Josh’s management, SBLM experienced significant growth, opened offices on Long Island, New York,  Miami Florida, Dallas Texas, and Dublin Ireland and decided to create a Studio format that focused on different project typologies – HealthCare, Education, Mixed-Use Residential, Retail /Commercial and Civic with the benefit of sharing design thinking solutions along with gained knowledges and experiences.

Today, SBLM focuses on providing environmentally responsible solutions across all five Studios that include healthcare institutions, public and private schools, colleges and universities, developers and institutional investors in the residential market, shopping center owners and developers and governmental agencies. SBLM’s deep bench of diligent designers, creative problem-solvers, insightful planners and seasoned collaborators meet the needs of our client's visions where we anticipate and adjust, re-evaluate and successfully respond.
